Hotels in Split, Croatia

The city of Split in southern Croatia is a glorious blend of ancient cultures and modern exuberance. Many Mediterranean empires have left their mark, from the early Greeks and Romans to the Venetians and Austrians, and today Split wears its past with pride. And don’t forget, the city, Croatia’s second largest, is on the coast of the beautiful Adriatic Sea, backed by dramatic mountains so you can combine the historic city with balmy beaches and scenic beauty for a perfect Croatian vacation.

So if you’re planning a trip to this UNESCO world heritage city, we’ve compiled a list of our five favorite hotels in Split to give you somewhere special to lay your hat; we know you’ll have a fabulous stay.

1. The Judita Palace, your home away from home

Situated at the heart of the ancient Roman palace of Emperor Diocletian, with a balcony overlooking the city’s main square and just eight stylishly chic bedrooms, the Judita Palace is a fabulous home away from home. It’s a haven for lovers of history, architecture and culture, making an ideal base from which to explore the fascinating historic city center and beyond.

Just over fifty yards from the hotel’s door is the cathedral of St. Doimus, one of the earliest Christian churches in Croatia that was formerly Diocletian’s tomb. Shops, bars and mouth-watering local restaurants dot the district. And at just a 10-minute stroll from the Adriatic beaches that frame Split, this has got to be the best place to lay your sunhat every evening.

This beautiful boutique hotel, inside a 16th century palace, incorporates Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture clustered around a pretty courtyard. All rooms feature characteristic exposed stonewalls and their elegant décor, with period furnishings, provides a wonderfully elegant air of luxury. Add to that the panoramic views of the “pjaca” (main square), or quiet balconies from which to watch the world go by; what more do you need?

Their hospitality knows no bounds so whether you fancy a walking tour of Split, some help with your bags, restaurant bookings or simply a relaxing, restful stay, manager Andrija Prostran and his small, select staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, looked after and one of the family. No wonder, then, that Judita Palace is our favorite of all the hotels in Split and it could be yours, too.

2. The Hotel Park

Our second choice has been welcoming guests since 1921; it swaps a city center location for a beautiful beachfront vista overlooking the dazzling Adriatic. The Hotel Park is one of the oldest hotels in Split, and actually part of the city’s history itself since Italy signed their capitulation in 1943 at the hotel, marking the beginning of the end of World War II.

Today the 5-star hotel offers everything you need for a fantastic family getaway. Take a dip in the pool, soak up the sizzling sun on the terrace or relax in the tranquil hotel spa. Or do like the locals do and head across the road to the famous Bačvice beach. The beautiful sandy bay is perfect for swimmers, sun worshippers and beach games, especially the local picigin, a ball game similar to volleyball. It’s a wonderfully relaxing pace of life and, together with the beach bars that ring the cove, is the perfect spot to recharge your batteries. And yet it’s still only a half-mile from the historic center of Split.

After a fabulous day at the beach or exploring the stone-paved streets of Spit, the contemporary comfort of the hotel will cosset and cherish you. Piano music greets you on your return, Champagne awaits at the bar and the dining room is set for a top gastronomic experience. And the menu doesn’t disappoint with a mouthwatering array of local meats, Adriatic fish and Dalmatian-grown fruit and vegetables, accented with aromatic herbs. It’s simply delicious and the perfect way to round off your wonderful Croatian vacation in one of our favorite hotels in Split.

3. The Hotel Vestibul Palace

Back in the center, the Hotel Vestibul Palace wears its history on its sleeve, merging three antique palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods into Split’s first boutique hotel. The hotel sits within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, occupying a unique spot on the waterfront that was originally reserved for the emperor’s chambers and peristile, the sacred home of the gods. So a stay at the Vestibul Palace comprises nearly 2,000 years of history, immersing you mesmerizingly in the city’s story from the very moment you check in.

And from here you can explore everything the Split has to offer. Obviously there’s the UNESCO-protected, fortress-like palace of Diocletian, built in the 300’s AD as his retirement home after his glorious campaigns. If you’re thinking of a pensioner’s bungalow, though, think again. Diocletian’s retreat included more than 200 buildings and was once home to hundreds of people. As the Romans’ influence faded, locals began to infiltrate the palace, building their own refuges, homes and civic buildings. So today, while the gates and walls of the palace still frame the historic center, with the skeletons of old buildings dotted in between bars, homes, the cathedral and hotels, Split has grown throughout the former palace grounds like a forest taking over an old ruin; it is fascinating to explore.

The Vestibul Palace is the perfect compliment to its surroundings, with every exposed-stone wall telling a story of its own. And with just seven state-of-the-art guestrooms, a bar, restaurant and its own wine cellar to help you while away the sultry summer evenings, it really is one of the hotels in Split that is fit for the gods!

4. The Radisson Blu Resort

If you want to get away from it all and spend relaxed days overlooking serene, soothing views of the Adriatic Sea, then a stay at the Radisson Blue Resort is just what you need. Set on a tranquil, private pebble beach less than two miles from the city center, with dramatic Dalmatian mountains behind it, the hotel provides an array of options and activities for a picture-perfect seaside vacation. Choose from days spent reclining in the sultry sun, cooling off in the sea to water sports, sailing and island hopping. Or why not relax in the 21,500-square-foot spa, the largest in Split, enjoying the thermal area, Japanese Onsen pool and private treatments to ease the stresses of everyday life before an aperitivo on the beach? This really is the coolest place to recharge.

And the rooms are just as relaxed, boasting a cool, contemporary décor and magnificent views over the serene sea towards a string of Croatian islands including Brac. But before you lay your head on the pillow, soothed to sleep by the sound of the Adriatic’s waves lapping along the beach, why not check out the cocktail bar, three on-site restaurants and the lively nightlife? The Radisson Blu really is a resort to treasure so you will return home refreshed and revived. Absolute heaven!
