Truffle Hunting in an Istrian Forest

Truffle Hunting in an Istrian Forest

  • City: Rovinj
  • Duration: Approximately 8 hours.

Overview

Of the 70 different types of truffles in the world, almost half come from Europe. Istrian forests boast three types of black truffles, as well as an enormous white truffle that is one of the most prized in the world, at $2,500 per pound.

This story started in 1999 when Giancarlo Zigante, a retailer of fresh truffles, found a 3.5 lb. white truffle in the forest of Motovun, with the help of his dog Diana. He named his discovery “Millennium,” entering it in the Guinness Book of World Records, and had it cast in bronze before eating the mega-truffle at a dinner given for 100 guests.

Giancarlo Zigante, today known as the “King of Truffles,” is Croatia's largest exporter and this full-day tour is an introduction to the wonderful world of Istrian truffles. Starting from your hotel in Rovinj, you will first drive to the Lim Fjord for a photo opportunity.

Next, comes the most exciting part of your day in Livade, a village in the northern part of the Istrian peninsula, where Zigante Tartufi was founded in 1992. Truffle hunting demonstrations are held about a mile from the restaurant, in cooperation with local connoisseurs of truffles and their trained dogs. Estimated time for the demonstration is one hour.

The demonstration will be followed by a 4-course truffle lunch at Zigante Restaurant, with the choice between a menu featuring white or black truffles at the time of booking. After an incredible lunch, you will return to your hotel in Rovinj.
