Half-Day Dubrovnik: Introduction to 'The Pearl of the Adriatic'

Half-Day Dubrovnik: Introduction to 'The Pearl of the Adriatic'

  • City: Dubrovnik
  • Duration: This tour is approximately 3 hours in length.

Overview

If you have just one day to see Dubrovnik, this is the tour that will help you get the most out of your visit and enhance your appreciation of the city's historic and architectural highlights. For those planning a longer stay, this tour will provide the perfect introduction to 'Ragusa' - Dubrovnik's ancient Roman name, translating to the 'City of Freedom'.

The tour starts on Srdj Hill - the large mountain that looms over the Old Town. This will give you a bird's eye view of the layout of the walled city, as well as a better understanding of how close the neighboring borders are, especially in regards to the war that occurred over 20 years ago. You will continue along to the 'War Museum' located in the 'Fort Imperial', built between 1806-1812. Inside there are maps of the war damage and all manner of memorabilia.

With a drive back down to Dubrovnik, the next stop will be the 'Old Town'. Strolling through the marble-paved streets, many monuments of historical architecture that made indelible marks on the 'City of Freedom' will be seen.

Next comes a visit to the 'Franciscan Monastery', where the oldest working pharmacy in Europe is located; originally opened in 1317, it has been in operation for over 700 years. Continuing along to the 'Rector's Palace', now a museum, you will admire the enormous and impressive 15th century Gothic-Renaissance architecture that evokes the glorious history of Dubrovnik.

Continuing to explore the picturesque corners of the historic center, you'll arrive at 'St.Blaise Church' there, at the top of the stairway, is a panoramic view of the famous 'Stradun' pedestrian street, encompassing the history of Ragusa's magnificent past.

What better way to end the tour than do what the locals do? Have a drink in one of the charming cafes and absorb the everyday life of the town: this way you can fully understand why Dubrovnik is called 'The Pearl of Adriatic.'
