This unique walking tour reveals a visual feast for lovers of heritage and historical architecture. It is the perfect two-hour introduction to the wonders of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hvar, from the city's most beautiful monuments to the places where locals go for coffee.
Discover the charm of Hvar's Old Town, known as Groda, as you find yourself treading this timeless cultural grid, divided by ancient walls and dotted with monuments. You will ascend to the famous Arsenal, mentioned in Venetian documents as 'the most beautiful and the most useful building in the whole of Dalmatia'. The Arsenal once served as a repair and refitting station for war galleons.
Next up is the 15th century Franciscan Monastery. It boasts an immense painting of 'The Last Supper' by the Venetian Matteo Ingoli, dating from the end of the 16th century. Here you will also encounter a refectory containing lace, coins, nautical charts and valuable documents such as an edition of Ptolemy's Atlas, printed in 1524.
A little further along you will find the Cathedral of St. Stephen, in the piazza of the same name. A majestic, four-level bell tower, each level more elaborate than the last flank the Cathedral. It was built in the 16th and 17th centuries, at the height of the Dalmatian Renaissance. Measuring more than 48,000 square feet, St. Stephan's piazza is one of the largest squares in Dalmatia and gives the ultimate view into the everyday island life of the locals.
