Imperial Istria: The History of Istria in the Roman Empire

Imperial Istria: The History of Istria in the Roman Empire

  • City: Rovinj
  • Duration: Approximately 6 hours.

Overview

Istria's most famous archeological sites will be visited on this full-day tour, introducing you to life as it was lived during the Roman Empire. The history of the entire region of Istria has been impacted greatly by the Romans who nicknamed this area terra magica.

The guided tour begins in Pula at the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, built in honor of the Sergi family who fought on the side of Emperor Augustus in the Battle of Actium in present-day Greece. A temple dedicated to Augustus stands in the Forum, the main square in Roman times.

The tour then moves inside Pula's cathedral, an interesting architectural construction built over many centuries: its rear wall is from the 4th century, the sanctuary from 5th, the interior from the 15th century, and the bell tower from the 17th century.

Next stop is Porec , a 2nd century BC Roman Castrum built on a tiny peninsula where the town center is now. During the reign of Emperor Augustus, it officially became a city and was part of the Roman colony of Colonia Iulia Parentium.

Proceeding to the Euphrasian Basilica , you will see the remains of a Christian complex. The floor mosaic from its oratory, originally part of a large Roman house, is still preserved in the garden of the Basilica; it later became an extension to the original church. Today the Euphrasian Basilica is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The old part of Porec still displays the typical geometric pattern of an ancient Roman town. As you enter the city, the remains of the temples dedicated to the Roman gods Neptune and Mars can still be seen. Marafor Square, where these temples are located, used to be the biggest Roman sanctuary in Istria.
