Off the beaten path in Montenegro - Skadar Lake

  • City: Kotor

Discover the magical Skadar Lake National Park while driving through picturesque, pristine Montenegro landscapes and passing by many historic monuments. The territory of Skadar Lake is divided between two countries - Montenegro and Albania - but the Montenegrins got the western part which was declared a National Park in 1983, and in 1996, was added to World`s List of Wetlands of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention.

With its long tourism tradition, this national park offers travelers a wide choice of sporting activities, gastronomic experiences and boat cruises. It is especially suited to bird watching since 270 species of birds inhabit this lake.

Your full-day tour will start in Kotor where your guide will meet you and escort you to the car to start your drive to the park. After passing through the villages of Budva, Petrovac and Pastrovske gora, you will arrive in Virpazar, a very small town that lies at the place where two rivers meet and immediately flow into Skadar Lake. Here you will meet the boat that will take you on a guided boat cruise on the lake, with snacks and drinks served on board. The boat ride ends in Rijeka Crnojevica, where you will meet your driver and continue your excursion towards the town of Cetinje.

On your sightseeing tour of Cetinje, the former Royal Capital of Montenegro, you will visit King Nikola's castle, completed in 1867. Montenegro's last ruler made great progress by opening many public edifices such as foreign consulates, Cetinje's first hotel, the Girl's Institute and the hospital.

Afterwards you will return to Kotor via the village of Ivanovi Kotari where you will stop for a traditional snack of homemade bread and prsut (Croatian ham).
